Longsword Twister
In this training game, you'll use a homemade deck of "technique cards" to play Longsword Twister, by randomly moving through attacks, from one ward to another.
What you'll need:
- A deck of cards with technique and finish position written on each one. For example: zornhau (technique) and pflug (finish position).
- A friend/training partner to shuffle the deck and call out the techniques on the cards.
Set a certain number of cards (e.g., five) and work through the techniques as they are called, then repeat them in a smooth, continual flow.
While this exercise can work with any set of techniques, no matter what style/method of fencing you're practicing, here are a few suggestions from the German techniques used for training at San Diego Longsword:
Techniques
- Zornhau
- Zwerchau
- Krumphau
- Thrust to Longpoint
- Schnappen
- Half Sword Transition and Thrust
Finish Positions
- Ochs
- Alber
- Nebenhut
- Vom Tag
- Longpoint
- Pflug
Mix these techniques/positions on your cards (or any others you want to train with) and draw randomly to work through a challenging series of movements. Have fun!
